  • Day 15 (Pete)

A cold and hungry night passed restlessly. The first seven miles flew by effortlessly so we decided on an early lunch at Dobsen Trail Camp. We cooked with the last of our water. Unfortunately, as we would have known if we had prudently checked before hand, Dobsen spring was dry. The next six miles would…

  • Day 15 (Tape)

Alright, well I think I lost an entry in there, cause there’s a whole day missing. So what happened the day after we spent that night kind of close to the houses is we hauled butt to ah, to a campsite above Big Bear. It was dry, one of the places was dry. We hiked…

  • Day 15

About six miles short of the road to Big Bear we run completely out of food and water. There’s no description for the ecstasy that consumed us as we consumed our first kitchen-cooked meal since the day we set foot on the trail. It made the 3-mile walk back to our campsite feel like nothing.

  • Day 14 (Pete)

The Motorcycle guys told us yesterday it was Sunday. The sun was already over the ridge when we woke up. Regardless it was a cold, slow start. We walked and walked and walked as the sun rose higher. It turned into a pleasant day. Warm with plenty of shade from tall pines. There were several…

  • Day 14 (Tape)

Well it must Monday now, since yesterday was Sunday. And this is just like the perfect day. We’ve probably already gone eight or nine miles and they’ve just breezed by. Shhhhheww. We’re just going on through forests. The day is cool but its sunny. Just like, the perfect walking day. I’ll almost be sad when…

  • Day 14

Our path wends almost effortlessly through the San Bernardios. A day that walking feels like the only natural thing to do. In fact we try to stop early, we had planned on an easy day. We can’t, it drives us nuts. After another five miles we can relax and dream of the food that lies…

  • Day 13 (Pete)

Nothing sinister happened. Today was easy, in one sense, because we went short on the mileage. We did have to labor up 5000 vertical feet almost a mile strait into the sky. Now, thanks to our efforts, we are at 8000 ft. high in the San Bernadino Mountains. The air is much cooler, there are…

  • Day 13

Well, it’s a new day now. I didn’t make another tape entry last night. But it as pretty much one more trip to planet nightmare. As we walked across the dead earth on top of this. But it was the evening hours cause we lounged around our little oasis by the stream for probably four…

  • Day 13

We labor up Mission Creek, which rewards us with increasing beauty. Minds which once carried on complex internal dialogues now chant “Food Food Food Good Food Good”. Does it make us argue bitterly? Comtemplate cannibalism? No more than you’d expect.

  • Day 12 (Pete)

Day 12: “People ask me what its like to go on walks like this and I just (smiles and shakes his head.) I Mean you can show ’em the pictures, read ’em the words, sing ’em the songs but…” -Walkin Jim Stoltz Today is perhaps impossible to put into words. It has been far and…
