No Hay Bales
They actually disappeared back around Christmas. It seemed like a dark time of year to move a huge stack of hay bales. Shortly after, cattle appeared in the field, grazing in the morning light. It’s probably all connected, but such is disjointed view of a ranch from the perspective of a passing bike commuter.

Geo Mashup 0.3 WordPress Plugin Released
The 0.3-beta package has been out for a while now, and is in use on a number of sites, so I’m dropping the beta. Check the download page for more. This release includes some minor fixes: Fixed Firefox entity unescaping – those nasty ‖ sequences should be gone. Removed some experimental code. Moved the included…

Movie: Kung Fu Hustle (2004)
We endure about fifteen minutes before turning it off. The good spirit behind the lowbrow humor in Shaolin Soccer was totally absent, leaving behind a flashy but ultimately ugly and degrading spectacle.

Flowers Road Snag
Wanting to explore the foothills beyond Lory State Park, I take us up Rist Canyon. We see no public trails anywhere along Rist Canyon road, or a couple of side roads. When it hits Stove Prarie, the road becomes the dirt Flowers Road, and wends through several private ranches, including the hulking stone stables of…

Grate Impression

White Moon, Black Tree, Red Hills
The rising sun has been turning the foothills into rubies recently. To stretch the analogy, the tree is the living stuff that can become coal long after it dies, and diamonds shining like the moon long after that. Ok, I’ll shut up and leave the poor picture alone now 🙂 I played with some sunrise…

Michigan Ditch Snowshoe
I woke up Saturday with the worst stiff neck I’ve ever had, and have been down all weekend with it. Luckily that didn’t stop Ann from heading up to Cameron Pass with Sean, Jason, and Sarada for some snowshoeing. And she took pictures for us! They hiked along the Michigan Ditch trail, and got pelted…

Movie: Happy Endings (2005)
I was initially put off by the too-blatant attempts to be self-referential, more of the same stuff that didn’t work in The Opposite of Sex. If you can forgive the film for that, though, this one does manage to convey a fairly intense sense of capriciousness without being excessively implausible, as well as some humorous…

Movie: Some Like It Hot (1959)
A deserved classic. For the situation comedy format it manages to not be entirely goofy, although suspension of disbelief is definitely a requirement. As a gender-bending film it has held up remarkably well with time, though the social commentary is dated much of it still works – a tribute to a well-written script. It’s the…
