Wanting to explore the foothills beyond Lory State Park, I take us up Rist Canyon. We see no public trails anywhere along Rist Canyon road, or a couple of side roads. When it hits Stove Prarie, the road becomes the dirt Flowers Road, and wends through several private ranches, including the hulking stone stables of Stove Prarie Ranch. After a few miles of this it enters National Forest, where it becomes a bit rougher. The subaru could probably make it up this in the summer, but for today we park and hike up the snowy track to the first good view.
