Movie: Bull Durham

The ankle injury is finally paying off with some movie reviews. This is a baseball movie that features Kevin Costner. Despite those two strikes against it, it recovers marvelously. Tim Robbins wears garters and breathes through his eyelids while he pitches, sings of wooly women, and survives nights tied up in Susan Sarandon’s bed while she reads Walt Whitman aloud.

Movie: Patton

Probably the best portrait-film I’ve seen. It deftly catches so many facets of the character’s personality, many completely contradictory, that I soon gave in to a sort of overwhelmed oscillation between awe and revulsion. There are great quotes throughout the dialog, lots of maps, convincing battle scenes, poetry, and historical soliloquoies. Definitely a perspective on WWII different from the recent Hollywood takes.

weekend encounters

Filed under:  — cyberhobo at 11:08 pm

So far, resting the ankle has not made life dull. On the contrary, it’s brought some rewarding and unexpected experiences. This weekend’s encounters included new and strange wildflowers, a bear, and a sort of underground superhero.

Well done, but came across to me as a dramatization of stereotypes of depression-era Catholic schools and fascist movements. To this Yankee, the setting in 1930’s Liverpool was totally convincing, more interesting to me than the contrived plot.

Roy Orbison in Clingfilm

Filed under:  — cyberhobo at 08:26 am

I don’t really see my blog as a catalog of links of interest, but when a site intrigues me enough that I remember it later and look it up, I think it has influenced my life sufficiently to warrant a log entry. Such is the case with the simple but strangely fascinating Roy Orbison In Clingfilm Website.

My close friend from my school days in Chicago, I’m honored that Nathan will be attending my wedding both as friend and photographer. Nathan and I are not only college chums, we have also wandered Europe and spent many happy hours in some of Chicago’s finer establishments together.

Not Climbing

Filed under:  — cyberhobo at 04:39 pm

Ann called me last night and asked me if I’d like a visit – of course I said yes – and she was already in the driveway! Tricksy girl. She’s made the day special and distracted me from the fact that I need to continue resting my ankle and abstaining from climbing. She wants to climb also, and it will be a test of my self-discipline if I can take her climbing tomorrow and not rope up myself. I want to so badly.

The boys are starting their journey to the East Butress of Whitney and we are having a quiet day. My first in a while, and I realize there are acutally lots of quiet things I want to do. Play the piano, work on the blog, work on the shack, etc. I even went in to the office and got some substantial things done in a couple of hours. So staying off the ankle isn’t so bad. (repeat until convinced)

Spoonerisms

Filed under:  — cyberhobo at 02:17 pm

I hadn’t heard this term until somebody caught one in my last post (I had demon- instead of denom-inational, yikes!). My favorite that I’ve committed though was in my fiancee’s parent’s car as we were looking for a place to get ice cream. We passed a shop trying to see if it was open, and I said “No, look, the stairs are chacked.” (Meaning chairs stacked).

There’s a definition and some funnier examples on Dictionary.com.

We have a minister

We found a minister to officiate at our Joshua Tree wedding: Reverend Irma Kaye Sawyer. She is a non-denominational minister who has a home in Yucca Valley and loves doing wedding ceremonies in the park. Just what we were looking for! We met her this weekend and are excited and relieved to have another piece of the puzzle in place.
