CSU Job Interview
Today I had my first job interview at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. Ann suggested I bring a toothbrush, but I ignored her. I didn’t even look in the mirror before I went in. The interview seemed to go well. I felt well-qualified, and I liked the people interviewing me. It wasn’t until I…

North Table Mountain
It’s a nice day above Golden. We start on Killian’s Dead (5.6), a reference to the giant Coors brewery below. It’s a steep crack with some good, awkward moves. After that we return to Lemons, Limes, and Tangerines (5.8 ) , which feels much better than last time. I almost manage a downclimb of it.

Back on the rock
After scoping out Golden Cliffs, a sport climbing area above the monstrous Coors brewery in Golden, we’re inspired to get the gear out of the storage unit. We attempt two 5.8 routes on top rope, a crack and a face. The rock is good basalt, reminiscent of the rock in Owen’s River Gorge. We can…

Having a Ball
My dad and Sarah have been avid dancers for a long time, but only recently have become competitive. Ann and I have fun rooting for them at this competition at the Antler’s Hilton in Colorado Springs. There are lots of good dancers there, all in full costume. It is fun to watch, but it also…

Movie: The Innocent
A gruesome, grating cold war spy story. Isabella Rosellini and Anthony Hopkins do their best to redeem it, but the main character never earned my sympathy. I got very tired of watching his endless attempts to dispose of a dismembered body in two giant suitcases.

Movie: Connie and Carla
Two women hide from a drug dealer disguised as drag queens in Hollywood. The plot is just an excuse for the performances, which are hilarious and insightful. The movie mines a wealth of humor from the fact that behavior that is totally uninteresting when exhibited by women can be very intriguing and entertaining in drag…

New Project
I haven’t yet had any responses to my job applications at universities, but when I contacted my old friends at OutsourceiT in Denver they had a project for me. I’ll be adding some features to the University of Colorado’s Center for Computational Biology website. They want features like user logins, mailing lists, and news items…

Movie: Ridicule
This is a French film about the popularity and ruthlessness of wit in the court of King Louis XVI. There is some clever repartee and interesting portrayal of the period, but nothing very unique in the plot or execution of the film.

Movie: Avalon
A Russian immigrant lives the American dream, good and bad. The attention to historical detail in the 40’s and 50’s Baltimore set is impeccable. Mr. Krichinsky arrives in 1916 and lives to see his son and nephew lay the foundations for K-mart, the exodus from the city to the suburbs, the impact of television on…

Movie: L’Homme du Train (Man on the Train)
Two men meet. One has lived too softly, the other too hard. Each finds the other’s life tremendously alluring. I find this dichotomy in my own life, the introspection of reading and movie watching balanced against the raw experience of adventure. The concept is explored very nicely, with some wonderful poetry.
