Geo Mashup Plugin 1.1 Beta 1 Release

This is a bleeding edge release of my WordPress Geo Mashup Plugin. I know some of these features are in demand, so I’m making this preview release so you can play with them and start getting some feedback to me. There are loose ends, and I plan to put in more features, but it has hit a usable point (I think). I haven’t written the documentation yet, but here are the goodies:

  • Feature: category colors, connecting lines, and legend.
  • Feature: position meta tags for single post view and saved ‘default’ location.
  • Feature: position can be specified for pages as well as posts.
  • Feature: hide markers until a specified zoom level.
  • Feature: get a list of all geo-located posts.
  • Feature: limit the number of markers loaded (approximate).
  • Feature: Better caching. Load all markers in two passes, extended visible area then all.
  • Improvement: friendlier in-post text tags.
  • Improvement: better css margin and padding reset for map.
  • Fix: Cookies are now used only for a particular URL, so they don’t interfere with different views of the map.

  1. I’m testing the beta out and I’ve noticed that you can’t create custom markers anymore (the Javascript inserted into the page overrides the custom marker).

Other than that, the added feature of adding locations to pages is awesome!

  2. Yes – I realized that customizable category markers would delay the release quite a bit. I haven’t decide how to address marker customization yet, but I figure this way you can play while I think about it.

  3. Hi,

does: “category colors” means i can make different categories of markers (different symbols)?

another nice feature would be if where a lot of markers there is an bigger icon on a specific zoom level, and when the user zoom in it splits up.

All in all sounds great! good job!!!

  4. Thanks Joe,

Both things I would like to do, but not easy! Right now the colored markers are the Google Transit-style small markers.

  5. But if you will really make this things working, i think your plugin will be the best wordpress plugin ever ๐Ÿ˜‰

I thougt about some additional features (sorry ๐Ÿ™‚ )
    – possibility to show how many markers / categories are still posted ๐Ÿ™‚
    – something to sort marker (posts / pages) per street / zip / state (if it is possible ^^)
i do this with Tags but you have to do a lot tagging for this ๐Ÿ™‚

    Thanks for your great job!

  6. Another suggestion ^^

show only the latest Markers, for example last 30 Days / last 30 Markers… would be usefull if the map has a lot markers ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. I’m also really keen to get a route drawn between the points on my map – I’m travelling the world at the moment, and people want to know the route I’ve taken. The plugin is awesome though, especially with the new beta features.

  8. Brett,

I did get it, sorry. I see the problem, but I haven’t had a chance to try debugging it yet. My map has the same problem! Hopefully it is just an API change that I missed…

  9. I have done web site http://afere.pollitika.com which lists all known political afairs in croatia.

I have a problem which occured in last few days in that markers are there, hover over marker shows correct post title, but cloud refuses to show. Any ideas why? (or what to look for)

  10. I’m having the same issue where markers are there, but the cloud refuses to show when you click on a marker. This just started happening a day or two ago.

  11. I have exactly the same problem as Tim has. I had Geo with GeoMashup install (old versionnot 1.03 nor 1.1.1) and the cloud refuses to open, it happened a week ago.

I updated to latest version, desactivated Geo but the pb still remains.

    Any solutions ?
