Movie: Tideland (2007)

Filed under:  — cyberhobo at 09:30 pm

Tideland DVDTerry Gilliam’s recent movies have disappointed me, but I’m always willing to give him a chance. This time he has finally hit his stride again with a signature over-the-top Gilliam film that nevertheless treads a fine line between perversities in human nature that we can relate to and those that offend us, making us question the fuzzy line between in the process. Great, great stuff from Gilliam again at last!

The blog has been quiet, yes, but only due to big things afoot in the physical realm! This slideshow should explain what we’ve been up to. Hover over Notes and use the arrow keys to scroll for the full commentary.

I even caught some live action:

A little sun at the Palace

Filed under:  — cyberhobo at 03:40 pm View on the hobomap

Clare comes up from Denver hoping for sun, but high clouds just seem to thicken. The temperature still hasn’t reached freezing when she gets here, but she’s game to do a little hiking if it’s too cold for climbing, so we head up Poudre Canyon anyway. The clouds don’t lift, but it is warmer at the Palace. The crossing is no problem. Frozen solid, the early whitewater season. There are a few people around, some getting on the rock. We hike up the Poudre Face, and have a go at a few routes. Cold, but doable. Eventually the sun comes out and we have an honestly pleasant climbing day. It feels so good after the cold spell we’ve been through. Good enough to make me forget to take pictures!

Book: The Foundation Trilogy

The Foundation Trilogy
author: Isaac Asimov
average rating: 4.44
rating: 4
I wanted to read the three books Asimov wrote in his early twenties first. The most amazing thing to me is how the writing, even as it stretches imagination and creativity with almost shocking vastness, still reflects early 50's American culture in every nuance. The galaxy is populated from end to end with humans who ply themselves with alcohol and tobacco, push the boundaries of microfilm and nuclear technology, and are nearly unaware of computers. Women remain primarily homemakers throughout. It's quite wonderful though, a grandiose future filled with insightful allegories and always-relevant queries into human nature that ultimately reveal as much about the writer and his environment as the futuristic subject matter. I'm really looking forward now to the remaining books, which Asimov wrote decades later.
