Mother & Child

Mother & Child

Well, the sunrises may be gone, but the bike commute continues to offer new spectacles. This morning I passed this white cow with a big slimy mass hanging out of her mouth. The calf was hidden in the grass, so it took me a moment to realize she had just given birth, and was eating the placenta. This calf got its start in the world today in a frosty patch of dead grass, in temperatures just below freezing. In a few minutes it will feel the sun for the first time.

  1. Wow, that’s amazing a cow would give birth at this time of year…is that normal? I would imagine there are still a couple months of possible trying weather conditions out there-so do you think that baby’s going to make it? Just wondering!
