Surprise, a sport crag

Ann with mushroomWe head to Beehive Buttress, near Brown’s Landing, looking for an obscure bolted multipitch route and maybe some nice cracks. Once again there are too many trees to get the camper to the end of the road, but the hike is still nice, and mushrooms are popping up everywhere in the moist pine needle duff. When we arrive at the wall we’re surprised to find a machine-gun bolted sport crag! A few climbers happily give us beta on the routes. Ann is inspired to lead “Corporal Clog” 5.8. She climbs through interesting sidepulls and some steep jugs in solid form. Moving left, I lead “Water Streak” 5.10a, a route with big moves and a special surprise along the way. Ann finishes with “Middle Staircase” 5.7, a blocky route with an awkward mantle. There are lots more routes here from 5.6 to 5.10, and we look forward to our next visit.

  1. No kidding, a sport crag in Vedauwoo? Well, looks like this isn’t exactly in Ved on your map. Hopefully that will keep whomever is bolting this from having the crud beat out of them. We DEFINATELY have to check this place out. What’s the aspect on the wall?

  2. Yes I wondered about the bolting of routes that were originally climbed on gear too, but apparently someone with a drill and a hardware budget has had their way with this wall. I wouldn’t like to see it happen to all of Vedauwoo, but I must admit that having some bolts on one wall is fun.

Beehive faces southeast. Across the way is a northwest-facing wall that supposedly has some 10’s and 11’s on it.
