  • Decatur and Revenue Summits

For my birthday hike we head up Guanella Pass Road to Geneva Creek Road, just west of Mt. Evans. Our map makes this out to be an improved dirt road to the Shelf Lake trailhead, but the road is really pretty rough from the start. We take the Subaru in a few miles, then park…

  • I celebrate more age

For thirty-three years now my family has spoiled me on my birthday. Thanks Ann, Mom, and Dad – I don’t deserve it. My actual birthday is on Tuesday. More Photos

  • Movie: Step Into Liquid

This is a surfing documentary that has enough diverse, awe-inspiring moments to capture and hold the imagination of a non-surfer. In total it’s probably a little more surfing than I would usually partake of in one course, but the quality is high throughout. There are many perspectives and traditions represented that add all take a…

  • SPL Lives

I nearly got rid of the old Self-Propelled Lazyboy in our downsizing liquidation, but chose to rehab it instead. With a new back tire and rear shifter, and a little elbow grease, I now have many comfortable commutes along the Cache La Poudre River to look forward to. And so does Jezze.

  • PCT Journals Moved

The account of my Pacific Crest Trail hike with my friend Pete in 1996 is now contained in the hobolog. There are a few ways to browse it. The topic links in the sidebar display posts in the default most-recent-first order, but you can also browse all posts from the beginning summary posts from the…

  • Movie: Hotel Rwanda

I was almost afraid to watch this movie because I was afraid to face to the brutality of the genocide in Rwanda. It turns out the movie is fairly gentle with the viewer. This may be a relief, but I don’t think it is entirely a good thing. We are shown a hopeful and heroic…

  • Live Music: Enemy In Me

This was a rare opportunity – my friend Pete’s band plays the Buckhorn bar in Laramie during Jubilee Days (Laramie’s yearly rodeo and street carnival), just a few weeks before he leaves for Chicago. It was most satisfying. The uncatagorizable crowd in the Buckhorn during Jubilee Days meets the uncatagorizable band from Pete’s garage studio.…

  • Vedauwoo – Valley Massif

I can’t resist this area of Vedauwoo. This time our friend Eryka comes along, and we hike into Valley Massif from the west instead of east. The flowers have totally changed, from pasque flowers and paintbrush to evening primrose, harebell, yarrow, and many I don’t know. The mosquitos are out in force now, and poor…

  • Review: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) Extended Version

I was amazed what some extra time for character development did for my enjoyment of this movie. It made the acting seem better due to enhanced continuity, and even the long battles are more entertaining when you care more about the characters. I can’t wait to watch the other extended versions.

  • Lake Agnes & Mount Richtofen

We get going early up to Cameron Pass for a hike that my dad took me on many times as a kid, past Lake Agnes and up Mount Richtofen. The early start pays off when we arrive at a nearly empty parking area that is just like I remember it, atop a dirt road that’s…
