Last post as a single hobo

Filed under:  — cyberhobo at 06:20 pm

I’ve left home, and when I return I’ll be married. People are on the road and in the air from coast to coast on their way to Joshua Tree. Calls are starting to come in, and I forgot to bring my phone charger, but otherwise it looks like the show will go on…

renting my woes away

Filed under:  — cyberhobo at 11:39 am

After calling every auto shop in town, poking around under the dashboard, and hours of subaru googling, the solution has become apparent. We’ll be going to our wedding in a rental car, and worry about our poor subaru when we return…

Modern Auto Errors

Filed under:  — cyberhobo at 07:49 am

Here’s a situation where I want an error message and can’t get it. My ‘96 Subaru Legacy’s “check engine” light has come on, and some googling suggested that I might be able to retrieve an error code that would tell what is wrong. After reading some instructions and making several trips out to peer under the dashboard, I concluded I was missing a connector. Finally I found the bad news: 1995 was the last year you could retrieve error codes without a “scanner”.

So the modern solution is to leave you with no idea whether it is safe to drive your car to a dealer (77 miles away), or whether it must be towed. Nice.

AT&T drops the bytes

Filed under:  — cyberhobo at 07:51 am

For those, including myself, who have unable to access my site for a few days, we can thank AT&T for mistakenly dropping iAdvantage, the biggest Internet Service Provider in Asia, from their network on Friday.

The plot sickens

I fear a grand conspiracy is being unveiled. The are no Subaru mechanics in town, and the import shop that has done work on my car for me is closed until August 4. Dennis is on vacation. Maybe it’s time to call Click and Clack.

The game begins

There five days to go until my wedding day. I will be doing several hundred miles of driving, including playing chauffeur for my guests. Late Saturday night, very visibly, and somehow ominously, the “check engine” light began to glow in my Subaru.

So the planned things are starting to happen, and also the unplanned. I wonder what else is in store?

This one is especially good at making you doubt your senses.

Assertion failure in
journal_commit_transaction() at commit.c:535: "buffer_jdirty
(bh)"

Came in to find this message on our trusty dual-processor database server this morning. It’s on RedHat’s errata page, the first fix for 7.3, a problem with the Symmetric Multiprocessor Kernel. The annoying thing is that the kernel with just that fix is no longer available, they want me to go to a kernel that requires lots of other updates in addition. It might be easier just to upgrade to RedHat 8, but I’ll try first to find a less demanding fix…

Outlook is saying this to me this morning when I hit the Send button. Almost funny in it’s uselessness.

Great Falls Basin

On a whim, Ann and I took off late Saturday night for Great Falls Basin, where we slept under an amazing sky and woke up early to get a climb in. This route is one of my favorites, Frosted Flakes (5.9). It requires some uncertain smearing, a little edging, and has an easy dihedral at the top. The anchors are awkward and scary. If you look up high in the left picture you can see Ann setting up a rappel up there.
