  1. so, you liked it then? i’m glad. i haven’t laughed so hard at a movie in i can’t remember when. and the ending was such a complete surprise for me, which always makes me enjoy a movie more, ’cause usually i have the plot figured out about a third of the way thru.

  2. Sigh, I guess I’m the only one in the world of people I love who hated it. I saw it in the theatre and while I applauded the themes—dissing of beauty pageants and a family who despite differences in the end sticks together—but still, I got pretty sick of life being one disaster after another, and the push-the-car-jokes….give me a break….

  3. see. and i too, thought after the first time they pushed the car that it would get old if they ever did it again, but each time i laughed even harder.

but then, i have an absurd love of the potty humour and fart jokes, so maybe it wasn’t that funny of a movie after all…

  4. I kept laughing. But I have had so many experiences of continuing on a journey when one recurring problem piles onto another… I could feel the pain, and so it hurt more and was funnier every time.

  5. Okay okay…I thought of renting it to see if I just missed something, or maybe I’m getting cranky in my old age, but somehow I thought you guys laughed enough for all of us! Good for you! By the way, I heard one of the guys interviewed and he confessed that they didn’t REALLY push the car like that. It was totally impossible to do. It actually started just fine.

  6. Hmm, Mark and I watched this movie about a week ago, and we thought it was just ok. Yeah, there were some funny bits, but I thought it was mostly just painful to watch too.

I thought the film was kind of schizophrenic. Half the time it wanted to be “Meet the Parents” and the other half it wanted to be “Magnolia”. Can you be artsy, dramatic and symbolic and have people take it seriously when you’re throwing in National Lampoon-esque shananagans? I didn’t.

  7. Interesting that this movie generates discussion like this! I do seem to enjoy a different kind of movie humor than most of my friends. I think a movie can be all things Kate listed, as well as a well-aimed satire through and through. Raising Arizona comes to mind as a prime example. This film falls a little short of that one in some categories, but I still really enjoy this kind of mix.
