California Lookouts in Decline

Filed under:  — cyberhobo at 12:42 pm

I used to fantasize about being a fire lookout, spending long solitary hours with an unparalleled view. When climbing at the Needles I heard that, “Perched at its top is a historic and beautiful USFS fire lookout tower that is usually staffed through the summer months by the aimiable Marge, who is known for baking cookies for climbers every Sunday morning.” On the CDT in New Mexico a fire lookout saved our fannies with fresh water after two dry springs. I’ll miss them when they’re gone.
