Stinky Fire in Yellowstone

Filed under:  — cyberhobo at 6:07 pm

It’s a small fire so far at 1000 acres, but has caused some closures, and what a great name.

Now this is useful outdoor knowlege that addresses a common problem. I’ve known the technique as Kowboy Kleenex and Texas Tissue, but this guide goes into the full detail of the Aussie version.

Funds for constanttrek

Filed under:  — cyberhobo at 9:22 am

Paula Constant has worked as hard as anyone I’ve witnessed to fund her adventure, walking across the Sarahara and perhaps beyond. I was afraid the ending would not be good, but she has kept at it and found enough money to get back on the trail, at least. Kudos to her.

California Lookouts in Decline

Filed under:  — cyberhobo at 12:42 pm

I used to fantasize about being a fire lookout, spending long solitary hours with an unparalleled view. When climbing at the Needles I heard that, “Perched at its top is a historic and beautiful USFS fire lookout tower that is usually staffed through the summer months by the aimiable Marge, who is known for baking cookies for climbers every Sunday morning.” On the CDT in New Mexico a fire lookout saved our fannies with fresh water after two dry springs. I’ll miss them when they’re gone.

I’d never seen this 1978 video from a camera mounted on a Ferrari speeding suicidally through the streets of Paris, but paired with a dynamic Google maps mashup is certainly the way to watch it.

The fish are drowning

Filed under:  — cyberhobo at 12:34 pm

Off the coast of Oregon a mysterious ‘dead zone’ of oxygen-depleted ocean water has returned every year since 2002, killing the crabs and fish in the area.

Fort Collins gets an Access Fund grant

Filed under:  — cyberhobo at 6:47 am

My hometown has received money from the Access Fund to officially open access to the Piano Boulder. I’m not aware that there has been any problem with access to this area, but a developed trail will certainly not hurt it.
